In the medium term the Schengen area will need some kind of harmonised asylum system, where support given to refugees is aligned across Europe and perhaps even centrally funded. The decision to share refugees across the EU must be put into practice. Refugees must be registered more effectively at the external borders of the EU and data must be shared between European countries. Europe needs a European solution to the refugee crisis. Jean-Claude Juncker, Angela Merkel and Wolfgang Schäuble are therefore right. The introduction of strict border controls, combined with another shock, perhaps from China, could put an end to the upswing. New jobs are being created and unemployment is falling. It is true however that the euro-area economy is now finally gaining momentum. Both countries may have economic problems, but this has nothing to do with border controls. Still, it would be wrong to think that the euro couldn’t function without Schengen. However it is difficult to estimate the costs, as it depends on how long waiting times on the borders would be. The introduction of controls on the German border would have significant consequences for cross border trade and production processes. More than 18 million trucks enter Germany every year via toll roads. Countless lorries and trucks are in circulation in Europe. More relevant may be the costs in freight. According to Eurostat, about 200 million trips to another EU country take place per year. On top of that would come the extra cost for the many personal and business trips in Europe. However some countries like Slovakia and Luxemburg would be harder hit. For the Schengen area as a whole, this is not a dramatic figure. Waiting times on the border would make their commute more difficult and increase economic costs.ĭepending on assumptions, these costs could reach 3-4 billion euro per year. These people would be directly affected by the reintroduction of border controls. We’re now taking action to amend that.First, about 1.7 million people in the Schengen area earn their salary in a different country to where they live. “People’s lives have been upended as a result of information that lead us to a course of action that now was not warranted in the circumstances. “This has had a massive impact on our community,” Stevens said. Only essential services, like supermarkets, medical facilities and public transport, remained open. The state had shut down schools, pubs, coffee shops and outdoor sports. Marshall added that authorities are now working to identify and locate another group of associates of the employee. The person who lied will not be fined or penalized, Stevens added. The premier and police commissioner defended the decision to go into lockdown and said it was the right one to take based on the information they had at the time. “We now know that they lied.”Īs of midnight Saturday, the state’s stay-at-home order will be repealed, and South Australians will be permitted to exercise outdoors and go back to previous restrictions. “SA health contact tracers found that one of the close contacts linked to the Woodville Pizza Bar deliberately mislead the contact tracing team,” Marshall said. The pizza bar had been identified as a Covid-19 hotspot. South Australia went into lockdown on Wednesday after confirming dozens of locally transmitted cases for the first time since April. South Australian Police Commissioner Grant Stevens said officials had since learned that a person who claimed to have been at the Woodville Pizza Bar in the city of Adelaide only briefly to collect a takeaway pizza was actually an employee who had been working regular shifts there.Īuthorities had previously concluded that the strain of Covid-19 was highly contagious, assuming the person had caught it despite a very short period of exposure. I went to Queensland for lunch and was stranded for three months
